Propranolol is a type of medicine called a beta-blocker. These medicines work by blocking beta receptors that are found in various parts of the body, including the heart. Blocking beta receptors blocks the effect of two chemicals, noradrenaline and adrenaline. These are often referred to as the 'fight or flight' hormones because they're responsible for producing the body's reaction to stressful situations. By blocking beta receptors in the heart, propranolol makes the heart beat slower and less forcefully. This reduces the pressure at which blood is pumped out of the heart and so lowers blood pressure. It also means that the heart doesn't use as much energy to pump the blood around the body. Propranolol has a lot of actions on the body and can be used for lots of conditions like high blood pressure, prevention of heart attacks, and preventing migraine headaches. In the mental health field, propranolol is used to manage the symptoms of anxiety (shaking, sweating, fast heartbeat). Propranolol has also been used to treat movement problems called akathisia and tardive dyskinesia, which can be side-effects of other mental health medicines (like antipsychotic medicines). Not everyone will experience side effects with propranolol. Some of the more common side effects are listed at the bottom of this page. If you are experiencing a problem that might be a side effect, but that is not listed here, please take a look at the patient information leaflet that was in the medicine packet or speak to your pharmacist or doctor. If you think you have a side effect that has not got better within a few days go back to your doctor. Lowering blood pressure can reduce the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events, primarily strokes and myocardial infarctions. Beta blockers (beta-adrenoceptor blocking agents) work mainly by decreasing the activity of the heart by blocking the action of hormones like adrenaline. Beta blockers are prescription-only medicines (POMS), which means they can only be prescribed by a GP or another suitably qualified healthcare professional. Examples of commonly used beta blockers include: Your GP can advise you about which medicine to use if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. It's important not to stop taking beta blockers without seeking your GP's advice. In some cases suddenly stopping the medicine may make your condition worse. Beta blockers, including beta blocker eye drops, can interact with other medicines, altering the effects of one of the medicines. Read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine to check that it's safe to take with beta blockers. 4) Management of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. 9) Management of phaeochromocytoma peri-operatively (with an alpha-blocker). 11) Prophylaxis of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with portal hypertension and oesophageal varices. 3) Long-term prophylaxis against re-infarction after recovery from acute myocardial infarction. 6) Relief of situational anxiety and generalised anxiety symptoms, particularly those of somatic type. 8) Adjunctive management of thyrotoxicosis and thyrotoxic crisis. Adults and children over 12 years: Hypertension: Initially 80mg twice daily, which may be increased at weekly intervals according to response. With concurrent diuretic or other antihypertensive drugs a further reduction of blood pressure is obtained. Angina, migraine and essential tremor: Initially 40mg two or three times daily, increasing by the same amount at weekly intervals according to response. An adequate response in migraine and essential tremor is usually seen in the range 80-160mg daily, and in angina 120-240mg daily. Situational and generalised anxiety: A dose of 40mg daily may provide short term relief of acute situational anxiety. Generalised anxiety, requiring longer term therapy, usually responds adequately to 40mg twice daily which, in individual cases, may be increased to 40mg three times daily. Inderal uk Inderal Uk!
