    Plaquenil and ringing in ears

Plaquenil is also known as a treatment for malaria, a blood-borne parasite spread by mosquitoes in many tropical and sub-tropical environments. The usual dose is between one and two tablets per day (200 to 400 mg per day). When Plaquenil works, most patients start to feel improvement after 8-12 weeks. When patients start Plaquenil, doctors usually have them try it for 3 months before they assess the patient to determine if it is working.

Hi, Has anyone had any problems with adverse effects from Plaquenil? I take 200 mg twice per day for 2 1/2 months now. At first, I had GI upset which resolved, but for that past month, I have had blurry vision, severe headaches, weakness, ringing ears and dizziness. I quit taking it Sunday and called my rheumatologist Ringing in the ears or hearing loss Worsening of skin conditions If you have psoriasis, Plaquenil may make your condition worse. Talk to your doctor if you have this condition. A few years ago I developed tinnitus ringing in the ears after being on 400mg./day of Plaquenil for 8 months. I had just had my hearing tested before this began and it was normal at the time. I called my audiologist and she said the tinnitus was a sign of ototoxicity and suggested I get off the med. or try reducing the dosage.

Plaquenil is considered to be pretty safe, but it can rarely damage the eyes. If it isn’t working at all after this time then it is usually stopped.

  3. The first time I tried Plaquenil I also had ringing, pressure feelings and dizziness in my ears. My Rheumy sent me to an ENT first to r/o hearing loss etc.when that came back OK, chalked it up to the plaquenil as a rare side effect. It was so bothersome we decided to try stopping the plaquenil but i went into a flare so went back on it.

The symptoms that you have been having, the headaches, nausea, ringing in the ears and blurred vision can be caused by the plaquenil. The problem is that lupus affecting the brain can present in the same way. These symptoms have to be reported to your doctor immediately. Hearing problems, such as ringing or ticking in the ears, or hearing changes Plaquenil may have toxic effects on your inner ear Loss of balance, coordination, room spinning, or other vertigo. Ringing in the ears is a known side effect of plaquenil and we just wonder about the brain twitches like a nerve firing because they are both centered in the brain. Has anyone else experienced anything liike this?
