Consumer Medicine Information This leaflet answers some common questions about Diflucan. It does not take the place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Your doctor has weighed the risks of you taking Diflucan against the benefits they expect it will have for you. Diflucan capsules (for adults) and oral suspension (for children) are used to treat certain fungal and yeast infections. If you have any concerns about taking this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Diflucan belongs to a group of medicines called azole antibiotics. It works by preventing the growth of the fungal and yeast organisms causing your infection. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why Diflucan has been prescribed for you. Your doctor may have prescribed Diflucan for another reason. Diflucan is available only with a doctor's prescription. Do not take Diflucan if you have an allergy to: Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body; rash, itching or hives on the skin. Diflucan should not be given if you are taking cisapride (a medicine used to treat stomach problems). Fluconazole is a first-generation triazole antifungal medication. It differs from earlier azole antifungals (such as ketoconazole) in that its structure contains a triazole ring instead of an imidazole ring. While the imidazole antifungals are mainly used topically, fluconazole and certain other triazole antifungals are preferred when systemic treatment is required because of their improved safety and predictable absorption when administered orally. Fluconazole's spectrum of activity includes most Candida species (but not Candida krusei or Candida glabrata), Cryptococcus neoformans, some dimorphic fungi, and dermatophytes, among others. Common uses include: Fungal resistance to drugs in the azole class tends to occur gradually over the course of prolonged drug therapy, resulting in clinical failure in immunocompromised patients (e.g., patients with advanced HIV receiving treatment for thrush or esophageal Candida infection). albicans, resistance occurs by way of mutations in the ERG11 gene, which codes for 14α-demethylase. These mutations prevent the azole drug from binding, while still allowing binding of the enzyme's natural substrate, lanosterol. glabrata is increasing the rate of efflux of the azole drug from the cell, by both ATP-binding cassette and major facilitator superfamily transporters. Development of resistance to one azole in this way will confer resistance to all drugs in the class. Other gene mutations are also known to contribute to development of resistance.

The recommended starting dose for high blood pressure is furosemide 40 mg twice daily. Based on the initial blood pressure response and/or side effects of furosemide, your healthcare provider may increase (or decrease) your dose if necessary. With each change in dosage, it may take several weeks to see the full effects of furosemide on lowering blood pressure. The recommended dose of furosemide for fluid retention (edema) can vary between 20 mg and 600 mg daily (taken as a single dose or divided and taken more frequently). Some people will only need to take furosemide when they need it (when they are experiencing water retention). Furosemide is approved for treating water retention (but not high blood pressure) in children and infants. Usually, the starting furosemide dose for infants and children is 2 mg per kilogram per day (about 0.9 mg per pound per day). The child's healthcare provider may increase the dose if needed, up to a maximum of 6 mg per kilogram (about 2.7 mg per pound). This site does not dispense medical advice or advice of any kind.
