And now I'm allergic to Plaquenil, which is actually fine by me because my psoriasis, which is normally very well controlled, erupted a few days before the hives and swelling started. The Plaquenil and sulfasalazine allergies manifested exactly the same way, though the sulfa reaction was a bit more severe. However, it has a number of other uses including lupus, arthritis, and various other autoimmune disorders. As with other drugs, an allergic reaction may be manifested by rash, headaches, blurred vision, or GI upset. Severe toxicities may result in changes of the retina. The drug is used based on the body weight. SIDE EFFECTS. The following adverse reactions have been identified during post-approval use of PLAQUENIL or other 4-aminoqunoline compounds. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure.

Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito.

  5. She said that plaquenil was the least likely to cause liver issues. I did read that there is a small possibility that was maybe the brand. Has anyone had a reaction to the generic, but then did ok with the name brand Plaquenil? Or anyone else that had such a severe reaction to Hydroxycloroquine but did well with another med entirely?

Hello! Thank you for your response! Yes, the plaquenil is generic. I’m allergic to sulfa drugs- could that have anything to do with this? I will take the list of other meds to my doctor and see what she thinks. I’ve gone back on the low-dose of provigil actually again the generic, modafinil to get me through the day. A mild allergic reaction is an allergic reaction that isn’t life threatening, but can still cause moderate discomfort to sufferers. While a severe allergic reaction can cause the throat to swell shut, compromising breathing, a mild allergic reaction usually just results in itching, redness, and irritation. Re Wife having reaction to Plaquenil, any insight? Ddierick, Dr. Wallace writes in his lupus hardcover available in most libraries that *some*, not many, people have skin reactions to name-brand Plaquenil, but even MORE have reactions to the GENERIC form, hydroxychloroquine.

Plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine Uses, Dosage, Side Effects. Feb 19, 2020 Long-term studies in animals have not been conducted to evaluate the carcinogenic potential of PLAQUENIL. The mutagenic potential of hydroxychloroquine was not evaluated.
