If your child has a sore throat, cough, or runny nose, you might expect the doctor to prescribe antibiotics. But most of the time, children don't need antibiotics to treat a respiratory illness. Here's why: If your child has a bacterial infection, antibiotics may help. But if your child has a virus, antibiotics will not help your child feel better or keep others from getting sick. Some cases of the flu are both viral and bacterial. Sometimes bacteria can cause sinus infections, but even then the infection usually clears up on its own in a week or so. Many common ear infections also clear up on their own without antibiotics. Some sore throats, like strep throat, are bacterial infections. Symptoms include fever, redness, and trouble swallowing.

Dec 19, 2012. When I was growing up in the 1980s and '90s with two younger brothers, the antibiotic amoxicillin was a frequent guest in our house. If your child has a sore throat, cough, or runny nose, you might expect the doctor to prescribe antibiotics. But most of the time, children don't need antibiotics to. Two studies were included in the review Darelid et al 17, and Gottfarb and Brauner 18, both of which investigated the role of an antibacterial agent amoxicillin-clavulanic acid 17 or erythromycin 18 versus placebo in the treatment of young children zero to six years of age with a prolonged cough associated with Moraxella.

If your child has a sore throat, cough, or runny nose, you might expect the doctor to prescribe antibiotics. But most of the time, children don’t need antibiotics to treat a respiratory illness. Here’s why: Antibiotics fight bacteria, not viruses. If your child has a bacterial infection, antibiotics may help. But if your child has a virus, antibiotics will not help your child feel better or keep others from getting sick. There are special medications that can be used in some cases to fight the flu virus. Antibiotics do not help treat viruses and some infections. Sometimes infants and children get bacterial infections on top of the flu. When a child has BOTH the flu and a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be needed. Sometimes bacteria can cause sinus infections, but even then the infection usually clears up on its own in a week or so. ‘The winter may be peak season for coughs and colds but there is no point in taking antibiotics to shift them’, The Independent reports. Its story comes from a large trial looking at whether a commonly used antibiotic, amoxicillin, can relieve symptoms of acute lower respiratory tract infections such as coughs and bronchitis. The study found that antibiotics didn’t shorten the time people had symptoms for, nor did they reduce the severity of respiratory symptoms. This is unsurprising as the majority of coughs and cases of bronchitis are thought to be caused by viral, not bacterial, infection – and antibiotics are useless against viral infections. If anything, as the Daily Mail points out, antibiotics may be doing more harm than good in these types of infection, as they carry a small risk of side effects such as nausea and rash. This large, well-designed trial provides firm evidence that taking antibiotics for self-limiting conditions, such as the cough or bronchitis, has little benefit, even for older people. The study was carried out by researchers from a number of institutions in Europe including the University of Southampton and Cardiff University in the UK.

Sertraline hydrochloride belongs to a class of antidepressant agents known as selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Despite distinct structural differences between compounds in this class, SSRIs possess similar pharmacological activity. As with other antidepressant agents, several weeks of therapy may be required before a clinical effect is seen. SSRIs are potent inhibitors of neuronal serotonin reuptake and terminal autoreceptors. The overall clinical effect of increased mood and decreased anxiety is thought to be due to adaptive changes in neuronal function that leads to enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission. Side effects include dry mouth, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, sexual dysfunction and headache (see Toxicity section below for a more detailed listing of side effects).
