Ciprofloxacin is effective in a broad range of infections. Because of wide-spectrum bactericidal activity, oral efficacy and good tolerability, it is being extensively employed for blind therapy of any infection, but should not be used for minor cases or where gram-positive organisms and /or anaerobes are primarily causative. In severe infections, therapy may be initiated by i.v. Ciprofloxacin (Brand Name: Ciproxin)belongs to a group of broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs known as fluoroquinolones. Ciproxin is used to treat bacterial infections, for example: It is rapidly absorbed orally, but the diet delays the intake and first-pass metabolism occur. It is the most active second generation fluoroquinolone against a wide range of bacteria that are susceptible to Gram-negative aerobic rods, especially the Enterobacteriaceae Neisseria. They must be combined with other tuberculosis drugs rifampicin and ethambutol. The key feature of ciprofloxacin is high tissue penetration. Ciprofloxacin is effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Other Brands: Novidat Manufactured By Sami Pharmaceutical Pvt Limited. The concentration in the lungs, sputum, muscles, bones, prostate, and phagocytes exceeds that of the plasma. It is active against susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus and is not effective against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is excreted mainly in the urine, both glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Ciprofloxacin (Ciproxin) has a very good activity against gram-negative bacteria, but enterococci, Streptococcus group A, B, D and streptococcal viridans with moderate susceptibility to ciprofloxacin. Urinary and biliary concentrations are 10 to 50 times higher than those of plasma. It is also very effective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. Ciprofloxacin ( Ciproxin ) inhibits the synthesis of DNA in microorganisms by inhibiting the bacterial topoisomerase enzyme DNA (DNA gyrase). Due to its broad spectrum, its oral effectiveness and its good tolerability, it is often used to treat infections, but should not be used for minor infections. in severe cases, treatment by intravenous infusion may be initiated, then continue with the oral.
