While prescription medications can have some unpleasant side effects, most diminish as your body adjusts to the drug. In other cases, side effects may persist or be worrisome enough that you should talk to your health care provider. Finasteride, a medication commonly used to treat enlarged prostate or male pattern baldness can cause several unwanted side effects, especially when testosterone levels are affected. In some cases, finasteride causes changes to breast tissue during the time a man is taking the medication. Tissue in one or both breasts can enlarge if estrogen levels increase. A condition known as gynecomastia cause large breasts in men when the glands of the breasts become enlarged. The condition can also cause breast tenderness and soreness. I dont know if anyone has seen this article lately on MSN homepage about the side effects of propecia. I was just wondering if taking propecia is having a negative affect for guys who are trying to add size? I dont know if anyone has seen this article lately on MSN homepage about the side effects of propecia. DHT is an androgen and is a hormone that binds to certain androgen recepters. DHT binds to cells in the scalp and for certain people, it can kill those cells, hence hairloss. I'm not a expert but if it decreases your testosterone levels I would assume thats not a good thing? I was just wondering if taking propecia is having a negative affect for guys who are trying to add size? Androgens are also responsible for things like deep voice, adam's apple, body hair, etc. Note that Testosterone itself is androgenic, not just anabolic. I'm not a expert but if it decreases your testosterone levels I would assume thats not a good thing? DHT , unfortunately, is also responsible for causing prostatic enlargement..... but contrary to what our OP has seemingly arrived at from what he read, I would expect TEST levels to go UP while on a DHT blocker, as, since it prevents conversion, it would result in MORE serum free testosterone. 'Twas on the mainstream media news (I think I saw something on the network TV news) recently that Propecia in some cases is causing impotence and low libido that though once said to be reversible, is not proving to be quite so reversible. How it does this has not been explained adequately, IMO, so it is hard to say what other adverse impacts there may be.
The sexual adverse experience profiles for finasteride and placebo were similar across the baseline testosterone cohorts examined. CONCLUSIONS Finasteride treatment led to a generally modest increase relative to placebo in serum testosterone, with the greatest increases occurring in men with low baseline testosterone levels. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair. Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp.
