View Full Profile Conversely, Xanax may cause your appetite to increase, meaning you may eat more food than you should for your diabetic diet. Gaining weight can cause an imbalance in the glucose you ingest through food and the insulin produced by your pancreas. Taking medications that increase insulin production may not be able to compensate for the surge in food coming into your system. Increased appetite and gaining weight both normally classify as non-serious side effects, but they can cause hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels in diabetics. I am currently taking the low dose xanax as needed & I have taken it for a number of years. I am thanking you guys in advance for your replies & responses! I noticed that the xanax sometimes make me sleepy & all I want to do is cut my anxiety & not get sleepy or lower my energy level! I take .25mg of xanax, but I want something similar that would lower my anxiety level. I have taken both, Xanax (alprazolam) which is short acting, and Ativan (lorazepam) which is long acting. I am going to ask my doctor, I go see her at the end of the month, but I am researching online in the meantime! They both belong to the drug class of benzodiazepines. Xanax worked best for my anxiety and it acts faster. But, Hope , in my opinion, I think ativan would be a good med for you. Ativan is stronger from my experience and it has a more calmer effect on me , due to my high tolerance to medications, I prefer it. Glad you're researching on-line to be informed at your Doc. Again , from my experience , I have taken many different benzodiazepines, and at first they make one sleepy, in my case, but they do not anymore. I shall mark this as a favorite to retain Maso's links for my research. This is in response to JW's question below about the "rules" docs use about prescribing Xanax/alprazolam. However, since it works so quickly, many folks start taking it more and more often, until it gets to the point that they are taking it daily. Not all docs feel this way, but here's how I think about it. Then they start taking it as soon as they feel it wear off. Of course, I am not suggesting that, if you are taking this anti-anxiety drug, you should stop it. Before you know it, you are taking it 3-4 times per day. The big problem is all because of your brain's laziness. Halcion is the only similar sedative that has a shorter half-life (and that one has even more problems). It is also quite lipophilic, meaning that it quickly gets into the brain. This is fine if you just take it on those rare anxious moments where you need something to get through it. The quicker a drug works, especially one which makes you feel good in some way, the more addicting it is, as the cause (taking it) and effect (feeling it) are close in time, making it very reinforcing. See, your brain makes it's own natural Xanax-like substance, called GABA. GABA works by inhibiting the brain's natural tendency to speed up.
Apr 5, 2018. If you have anxiety, there's a chance you've taken a medication like Xanax or Klonopin at some point, in order to better manage your symptoms. As a diabetic, you need to maintain a proper diet as well as engage in exercise and take your medication. Taking the benzodiazepine Xanax, which classifies.
